Stillwater / St. Croix River Valley, Minnesota

About the Area

Perhaps, one of the most unique areas of the entire Twin Cities is the community of Stillwater, and the area around the Lower St. Croix Valley. Sometimes referred to as “The Birthplace of Minnesota,” Stillwater has kept much of its unique heritage for more than 150 years. Today it is a widely popular day destination for Minneapolis and St. Paul area residents in search of interesting shops, antiques, and waterside restaurants with sprawling decks.

Homes along the St. Croix River tend to have an historical flavor to them, just like the town itself. An artistic spirit is obvious, and the area is home to many celebrities, authors, and artists who thrive on its character. Just to the south of Stillwater are other riverfront towns such as Bayport and Afton, which hold onto their own riverboat past.

But just a few miles inland from the river you will find a variety of very clear lakes, some like large ponds and others made for boating and plentiful recreation. Lake Elmo is a wonderful village bordering its namesake lake, and also caretaker of several other densely wooded lakes that make for great residential settings. The water body named Lake Elmo is one of the deepest in the Twin Cities at 140 feet, and was at one time a thriving tourist destination. Today, the west side of the lake is preserved by a county park for all to use.

The St. Croix River Valley is very convenient for those working in St. Paul or other parts of the Eastern Metro Area. It has great proximity to the Minneapolis St. Paul Airport for frequent travelers….and you can also be on the Highway 494 ring road in just a few minutes to take you to any part of the Twin Cities with ease.
