About the Area

If you're heading to Northern Minnesota in your search for waterfront real estate, you may want to check out Rainy Lake and the Rainy River near International Falls. Together with Lake Kabetogama, Namakan Lake, Sandpoint Lake, Crane Lake and Ash River, they form the northernmost point in this area of the U.S., and offer an incredibly scenic waterway where you can travel hundreds of miles by boat in both the United States and Canada. The area is filled with thousands of islands, rock outcroppings and sand beaches, many of which are in Voyageurs National Park. Because of this vast expanse of public lands, just a short boat trip can land you on a remote pristine beach where you will have as much privacy and solitude as if it were your own island in the middle of nowhere.

Lake cabins, lake homes and vacant lakefront properties are quite plentiful on the west end of Rainy Lake with nearly 1,000 property owners on the water, but waterfront real estate further east on Rainy - and into the other lakes on the chain - is in somewhat short supply because of the park. However, there still are a few remote parcels that sometimes come available up the lake, and if you're willing to look at lakefront and other recreational property on the Canadian side, you will find much more to choose from in areas like Redgut Bay, the Seine River and the North Arm.
