About the Area

Lake of the Woods is a little bit like a Great Lake. At almost 1,000,000 acres of water between the US and Canada, it's not something most people want to tackle in their canoe. But it is a beautiful, expansive water wonderland, having nearly 15,000 islands, vast sand beaches, countless varieties of wildlife, and a lifestyle resembling that of Alaska. It also borders the northernmost point of land - The Northwest Angle - in the Lower 48 states.

Baudette, Minnesota sits near the mouth of the Rainy River as it flows into Lake of the Woods. Huge walleyes like to pass by here on their way up the river during spring spawning and again in the fall. Willie the Walleye has a visible post in the heart of town, as his statue proclaims the title as "Walleye Capital of the World."

To the southwest end of the lake lies the other sizeable community in the area, Warroad, which is famous for Marvin Windows, Christian Brothers Hockey Sticks, and for many a well-known hockey players growing up within its borders. People of this region are known for a strong work ethic and their love of the outdoors.

Lake of the Woods is perhaps the only area in Minnesota where waterfront cabins and other lake properties can still be purchased for under $100,000 on a large recreational lake. If you are willing to travel this far for a chance to own waterfront real estate, Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River may be options that will get you close to some of the best fishing and cleanest air in the United States.
