About Lake Michigan - South Haven Area

South Haven is part of both Van Buren and Allegan counties, about one hour from Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo.

Named for its Beautiful Sunsets

Founded in 1787 by members of the Ottawa, Miami and Pottawattamie tribes, the area was named "Ni-Ko-Nong", which translates to “beautiful sunsets.

During pioneering times, the town of South Haven was officially founded by J.R. Monroe in 1833.

Because of its unique position on Lake Michigan, at the mouth of the Black River, South Haven became a port city for lumber and eventually peaches, apples and blueberries.

In fact, South Haven was crowned the “World’s Blueberry Capital” in 1969, a title which still holds today.

South Haven Activities

Each year, anglers flock to South Haven for the Annual Steelheaders Pro Am, an event that marks the start of boating season.

For more than three decades, the event has taken place the weekend after Mother’s Day, inviting the best salmon and trout fishermen to gather on South Haven’s Lake Michigan shore.

Apart from fishing, residents can enjoy peaceful nature walks at Van Buren State Park and then head over to the pier near South Haven Lighthouse and watch the sunset over the water.

South Haven also has a vibrant, year-round, downtown dining and shopping district located right on the harbor overlooking Lake Michigan.

The city has been ranked as one the best small towns by Midwest Living, and has also been recognized as one of the best yachting towns in the world by Yachting Magazine.

Celebrating over 100 years as a historic summer resort community, South Haven has earned long list of accolades from regional and national travel publications, the lovely small-town beckons for you to start your lake life here
