Just north of the great Lake Michigan lies a lesser-known — yet no less interesting — body of water called Lake Charlevoix. While Lake Michigan might hold a more famous name and a connection to large cities like Chicago, Lake Charlevoix\u2019s highlights are its unspoiled beaches, several state parks, and amazingly clear sunset views from one of the lake\u2019s many surrounding dunes. Another unique feature of this 17,200-acre lake is that water flows in both directions in a natural phenomenon called a seiche<\/a>. With incredible nature and interesting attractions, consider making Lake Charlevoix your next lakeside destination. One major attraction of Lake Charlevoix is its pristine, largely uninterrupted beaches<\/a>. Even better — these beaches are free, open to the public, and pet-friendly. While taking daily walks with your dog along these beautiful beaches, be sure to check out the sandy swimming area and playground at Ferry Beach, as well as the gardens near Depot Beach. If you make your way closer to Lake Michigan, you won\u2019t want to miss Charlevoix\u2019s historic South Pier Lighthouse<\/a> on Michigan Beach, built in the late 1800s after the area was founded. If your interest in history dates even further back, you\u2019re in luck — Lake Charlevoix is a prime place to find Petoskey stones, which are fossilized coral from 350 million years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you enjoy looking at homes that appear to have emerged from a charming fairy tale, explore the Earl Young Mushroom Houses<\/a>. Crafted by architect Earl Young between 1919 and the 1970s, these 26 houses are made only of indigenous materials such as fieldstone and limestone. If the famous Hobbiton from Lord of the Rings in New Zealand is too far a flight, these intriguing mushroom houses bear a strong resemblance. For even more interesting architecture, explore Castle Farms<\/a>, which includes an enchanted forest, a garden, and royal memorabilia. Just be sure to plan at least two hours for your visit!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you\u2019re searching for nature-trail hiking or fun-filled water sports, Lake Charlevoix has no shortage of recreational opportunities. If your goal is to get into nature,  this area has more than 20 trails and nature preserves<\/a>. For a glimpse of Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan, bike or walk along the Lake to Lake trail<\/a> that connects them. For water activities, try renting a boat, kayak, or paddleboard<\/a> to explore the amazingly clear waters. If you\u2019re visiting in winter, there are fantastic skiing opportunities. You won\u2019t want to miss hitting the slopes at The Highlands<\/a>, located 40 minutes from Charlevoix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lake Charlevoix area is home to boutique shopping, restaurants, and events. When it comes to a good restaurant scene, the downtown area has you covered. If you can\u2019t choose between all the options, ranging from French cuisine to traditional to farm-to-table, check out one of the food tours<\/a> in the area. As you\u2019re exploring the city, your taste buds may take you to a brewery like Bier\u2019s Inwood Brewery<\/a> or a small cafe like Cafe Meria<\/a>. While you\u2019re out exploring the town, discover the great nightlife scene in Charlevoix, which features venues like Bridge Street Tap Room<\/a> and The Villager Pub<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
