Surprisingly, most of them won\u2019t be found in the open waters outside your lake house. Many species of fish dwell only in underground lakes, often living in caves that are unreachable by boat. In fact, there are more than 200 distinct species of cavefish, also known as subterranean fish, existing on almost every continent besides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakehomes.com\/info\/articles-and-news\/six-interesting-facts-about-antarctic-lakes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Antarctica<\/a>. However, due to their underground locations, this number only scratches the surface of the abundance of species that likely exist. Today, we\u2019re taking a look at some interesting fish species found in underground lakes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-alabama-cavefish\">Alabama Cavefish<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/9\/9e\/AlabamaCavefish.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:218px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:AlabamaCavefish.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One unfortunate issue with fish species in underground lakes is their endangered state. More than 50 species are recognized as threatened by the I<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nternational Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Among them is the Alabama Cavefish. These underground-dwelling fish live only in Key Cave which is located in Lauderdale County, Alabama. Their population sits at only 100 fish, making them one of the rarest cave-dwelling species in North America. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dragon-snakehead\">Dragon Snakehead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"979\" height=\"718\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lakehomes.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/dragon-snakehead-smithsonian.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lakehomes.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/dragon-snakehead-smithsonian.png 979w, https:\/\/www.lakehomes.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/dragon-snakehead-smithsonian-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lakehomes.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/dragon-snakehead-smithsonian-768x563.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 979px) 100vw, 979px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/aubtu.biz\/95101\">Ralf Britz<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just last year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/subterranean-fish-named-gollum-belongs-new-family-180976123\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a new type of underground fish species was discovered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Living below the Indian state of Kerala, a plethora of intriguing fish exist &#8211; many of which are found nowhere else on earth. The recently-discovered dragon snakehead fish was originally seen in 2019 after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/en-IN\/india\/news\/news\/2020-01-08-top-5-biggest-floods-affect-india-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tragic floods in the state<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Thought to be part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/publications\/snakeheads-pisces-channidae-biological-synopsis-and-risk-assessment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Channidae <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family, scientists dismissed it as a common cavefish and named it Gollum <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the character from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lord of the Rings<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, after scientists have examined this fish in further detail over the past few years, it has become evident that the fish belongs to an entirely new family of snakeheads: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aenigmachanna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aenigmachanna<\/a>. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The realization that the dragon snakehead fish has unique characteristics all their own is one of the most exciting discoveries about aquatic life in the last decade. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mexican-cavefish\">Mexican Cavefish<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/2\/27\/Astyanax_fasciatus_%28Mexican_blind_cavefish%29_3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Astyanax_fasciatus_(Mexican_blind_cavefish)_3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two types of Mexican tetra: one is native to the Rio Grande, as well as other parts of Mexico and southern Texas. However, the other type of Mexican tetra (also known as Mexican cavefish or blind cave tetra) can be found in caverns and underground caves throughout the region. As a tough subtropical fish, they enjoy warm climates and feeding along the bottom of the lake. However, one of the most interesting things about the Mexican Cavefish is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2150233-blind-cave-fish-lost-eyes-by-unexpected-evolutionary-process\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">its evolution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Over time, this species has evolved to blindness. For most species, this transformation would be maladaptive and would only occur in a mutation. However, for the Mexican cavefish, the lack of eyesight is helpful for living in dark waters. Instead of attempting to see their surroundings, they get by using a lateral line system to detect changes in water vibrations.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hyaline-fish\">Hyaline Fish<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many subterranean fish species have existed for hundreds of years, the hyaline fish trumps them all. Documented almost 500 years ago in 1541, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/environment\/unicorn-fish-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hyaline fish<\/a> is the oldest recorded species of obligate cavefish. Found only in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Yunnan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yunnan, China<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this species is considered threatened. Like many other cave fish, it lacks scales and coloring, as well as external eyes. But the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sinocyclocheilus<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyalinus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s most unique characteristic is its skull horn and dorsal hump.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rattail-knifefishes\">Rattail Knifefishes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/2\/20\/Eigenmannia_virescens_%2816335551097%29.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/figure\/Living-specimen-of-Eigenmannia-vicentespelaea-with-relatively-well-developed-eyes-and_fig6_250051244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also known as glass knifefish, these fish live in freshwater streams in Panama and South America. However, a specific subspecies of glass knifefish, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eigenmannia_vicentespelaea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eigenmannia vicentespelaea<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, specifically inhabit caves. This subterranean fish species is the only cave-dwelling member of the knifefish family. Unlike other knifefish, it has a translucent body and small eyes. Specifically, they can be found in caves near Sao Domingos, a city in the Goias state of Brazil. It\u2019s endemic to this single cave system, meaning that these fish don\u2019t exist anywhere else in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These underground fish species &#8212; plus thousands more like them &#8212; are all part of the freshwater systems we don\u2019t see.
