A good thing to learn is how to replace a toilet handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether it is busted, rusted, cracked, or you just want to put a new one on, here are a few do-it-yourself tips<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately, replacing a toilet handle is fairly inexpensive and easy to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remove the Tank Lid<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first thing you\u2019ll need to do is clean anything off the back of the toilet and remove the lid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s best if you spread out a towel and place it on there \u2013 somewhere out of the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lids are made of porcelain, so be careful not to drop it, or knock into it, when you\u2019re working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside the tank there will be a model name and number. Jot it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This could save you some time when you go into the store to purchase the handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unhook the lift chain<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There will be a long arm inside the tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the end of it, there will be a chain attached that lifts the flush valve. Unhook the chain from the hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just remember which hole you unhooked the chain from so you can reattach it to the same one when you\u2019re done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remove the old handle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll want to go grab your crescent wrench to remove the nut inside the tank that\u2019s holding the handle sturdy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In many cases, this nut will turn clockwise as you loosen it \u2013 the opposite of most other nuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be gentle not to slip and bang the wrench into the porcelain. It can crack easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the nut is loosened, slide the arm through the hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buy the replacement handle<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Technically, the part you want to buy is called a \u201ctoilet trip lever,\u201d which includes the handle and swing arm inside of the package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For typical models, this won\u2019t cost more than $20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Go to the plumbing section of most any hardware store with your toilet\u2019s brand name and model number, and look for the matching handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To save time if there are any problems, you can bring your old handle to the store in case you need to look at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Put on the new handle<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before putting the new handle on, it\u2019s advised to clean any excess residue, mildew, or rust stains off the porcelain around the handle hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There will be a nut on the new handle. Remove this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insert the arm into the hole, and then slide the nut back over the arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, use your hand to turn it until it\u2019s time to use the crescent wrench to snug it up tight. Do not over-tighten or the porcelain could crack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reattach the chain<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find the same hole the chain was attached to, and reattach it to the arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s best to do some test flushes, and make sure the flush mechanism opens and closes fully each time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the chain is hooked to the wrong hole, making it too loose, the tank won\u2019t drain properly. If it\u2019s too tight, the flush valve will leak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adjust the chain up or down a link or two until the flush works properly again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
