We downsized and moved to the country, which meant that for the first time in my 50 years, I finally had a garden of my own! I was so excited. I saved kitchen scraps and lawn clippings for compost. A kindly new neighbor lent a tiller and shared country wisdom, such as advice for planting according to the almanac. I cleared weeds and created a flower garden around an old birdbath, planted a vegetable garden in the backyard, and covered an old clothesline pole with morning glory vines to remind me of my grandmother who, in Indiana, had grown a postage-stamp-sized garden. Mine wasn't much bigger, but it was still hard work, wrestling with the clay soil. Yet it was also fun to see a barren and neglected landscape come to life with bouquets of flowers and an abundance of vegetables and herbs for our kitchen. The garden thrived and continues to thrive in the east Tennessee sunshine. But what thrills me the most is how the creatures of the country have been attracted to the little garden oasis that I have created. Bees, butterflies, and moths come to sip the nectar and to continue their important work of pollination. Birds feast on bugs, while garden spiders and a praying mantis also help keep the pest population down. It is peaceful to listen to birds singing along with the tinkling of wind chimes while I toil in all kinds of weather. These creatures add beauty and companionship to my tiny slice of Eden. Each day is a new discovery of who will visit; I am amazed at the cornucopia of wildlife! Deer, squirrels, foxes, groundhogs, opossums, raccoons, skunks and chipmunks stop by for a nibble, and I don't mind as long as they leave most of it for us. Now each year I enlarge the garden so that I might have more harvests to share with my neighbors, both human and 4-legged. It is satisfying to come home after work and dig in the dirt until dusk, then listen to the concert of crickets and cicadas and the croaking of a lone frog. As another evening of gardening ends, I am content to watch the bats and fireflies dance around the fragrant flowers. In an era of increased development, I love helping to add habitat for the birds and the bees, and love being part of the country web of life. I might not have the largest or fanciest garden in the area, but I think if you took a poll of all of the wild animals that visit or build their nests and burrows near my humble garden, I like to think that they would vote it as the best in the country!
