A classic example is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakehomes.com\/info\/articles-and-news\/all-you-need-to-know-about-algae-blooms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">algae blooms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which spread a thin layer across the water\u2019s surface, blocking sunlight from the rest of the ecosystem underneath. These species spread rapidly, posing a threat to the biodiversity of native plants. However, not all lake plants pose a threat to marine life. This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aquaplant.tamu.edu\/plant-identification\/category-submerge-plants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">submerged perennial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides an excellent source of food for turtles, waterfowl, snails, and carp. It\u2019s also a hiding place for smaller organisms looking to protect themselves from prey. Because coontail absorbs nutrients from the water, this plant helps to improve water clarity at your lake. Like the coontail, it grows entirely underwater and serves as a source of food and habitat for aquatic life. Although it\u2019s typically non-invasive in the wild, it is important to note that in enclosed aquariums and ponds, this plant can become invasive when no other aquatic plants are present. In fact, it\u2019s in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.first-nature.com\/flowers\/~ranunculaceae.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">buttercup family<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But unlike your typical mental image of a buttercup, this non-invasive plant grows in wet places such as marshes, swamps, and lakes. These small flowers grow in clusters, providing ornamental beauty to any lake environment. Just be sure not to confuse the water marigold with the non-native invasive Lesser Celandine. While it stretches up to 3-4 feet tall, half of this plant is underwater. Above the water\u2019s surface, the plant\u2019s flowers attract bees, butterflies, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/14-fun-facts-about-dragonflies-96882693\/#:~:text=Flying%20insects%20are%20usually%20annoying.&amp;text=4%20)%20In%20their%20larval%20stage,larvae%20and%20even%20each%20other.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dragonflies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which eat mosquito larvae. Standing about 2-6 feet high, these plants tend to bloom over the summer in swamps and along other wet shorelines like lakes.
