{"id":1723,"date":"2016-09-19T20:10:29","date_gmt":"2016-09-19T20:10:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakehomes.com\/info\/articles\/?p=1723"},"modified":"2026-01-21T15:57:37","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T21:57:37","slug":"trotline-fishing-fill-freezer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lakehomes.com\/info\/lifestyles\/trotline-fishing-fill-freezer","title":{"rendered":"Trotline Fishing: Fill Your Freezer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A trotline is a long rope or cord, used for fishing, which features with multiple&nbsp;hooks that dangle from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These lines require little attention or effort to maintain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wonderful thing about a trotline is that you are fishing without standing there for hours on end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can put the line out and then in the morning go back to it for your fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you take the fish off the line, you can replace the bait and throw it right back in the water!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-setting-up-your-line\"><strong>Setting up Your Line<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First, bait the hooks with the bait of your choosing. Live bait, such as worms, shrimp and minnows, usually work well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After baiting each hook, simply attach one end to a tree limb or something similar on one side of the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, extend the rope out to its full length, and tie to opposite end to a second anchor. Be sure the line is submerged in the water and not sitting at the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-caution-and-local-laws\"><strong>Caution and Local Laws<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure to always clearly mark your trotline, as it can be dangerous to others who are swimming or fishing in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can mark these lines by attaching such things as plastic jugs to the anchor points to call attention to where you line extends to and from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many states have laws in place limiting how long a trotline can be out, how it has to be marked, and a limit to the number of hooks that can be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check with your local game and wildlife ranger for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-making-a-trotline\"><strong>Making a Trotline<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The easiest way to get a trotline is to buy a pre-made one, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.basspro.com\/shop\/SearchDisplay?categoryId=&amp;storeId=715838534&amp;catalogId=3074457345616676768&amp;langId=-1&amp;sType=SimpleSearch&amp;resultCatEntryType=2&amp;showResultsPage=true&amp;searchSource=Q&amp;pageView=&amp;beginIndex=0&amp;pageSize=12&amp;searchTerm=trotline#facet:&amp;productBeginIndex:0&amp;facetLimit:&amp;orderBy:&amp;pageView:grid&amp;minPrice:&amp;maxPrice:&amp;pageSize:&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this one from Bass Pro Shop<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also create one out of rope, cord, and fishing hooks, dangling a hook from the rope every three to five feet or so.
