Mostly referring to the oceanic waters of the world, this statistic reminds us how integral that water is to life on earth. However, not all water is surface-based. In fact, there are multiple bodies of water that exist beneath the surface of the earth. From subglacial lakes to cave lakes, hundreds of intriguing bodies of water lie tucked away in the most unexpected spots on Earth. As opposed to typical underground lakes, a subglacial lake simply refers to one that is covered by a layer of ice. In the case of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/38652-what-is-lake-vostok.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lake Vostok<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this layer happens to be 2.5 miles. Because of this lake\u2019s hidden nature, its existence was unknown until the 1990s when a Russian pilot and geographer noticed a unique oblong shape from the air. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the lake is part of Vostok Station, a Russian research hub in central Antarctica. Although scientists disagree about whether the lake existed before or after the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.antarcticglaciers.org\/antarctica-2\/east-antarctic-ice-sheet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">East Antarctic Ice Sheet <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was formed, they do agree on one thing: the lake\u2019s ecosystem is fascinating. With a temperature of -89 degrees Fahrenheit, the presence of life in Earth\u2019s coldest temperatures has implications for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/life-in-lake-vostok-the-link-between-antarctica-and-extra-terrestrials-5334\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">possibility of life on other planets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-largest-non-subglacial-underground-lake\">The Largest Non-Subglacial Underground Lake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The country of Namibia is famous for a lot of natural wonders &#8212; the treacherous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/skeleton-coast-namibia\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skeleton coast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/namibiatourism.com.na\/blog\/EXTREME-NAMIBIA-The-World-s-HIGHEST-Dunes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world\u2019s highest sand dunes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and most of the endangered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.savetherhino.org\/programmes\/ministry-of-environment-and-tourism\/#:~:text=Namibia%20holds%20almost%20a%20third,protect%20this%20important%20rhino%20population.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black rhino population<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Beyond these wonders, the country is also home to the largest non-subglacial underground lake. Located in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Otjozondjupa_Region\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otjozondjupa Region<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Namibia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencetimes.com\/articles\/50904\/20240625\/dragon-s-breath-cave-world-s-largest-underground-lake.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dragon\u2019s Breath Cave<\/a> was discovered in 1986 and named for the moist air that can be seen from the cave\u2019s entrance, resembling dragon\u2019s breath. At least 16 invertebrate species live in these zero-sunlight conditions, as well as a few other species, such as golden catfish, the most isolated fish in the world. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-smallest-underground-lake\">The Smallest Underground Lake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a small island in the <\/span><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">southwestern Pacific, the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/7toucans.com\/en\/things-to-do-when-traveling\/australia-and-oceania\/nauru\/1609-caves-and-underground-lake-moqua-well\/gallery#show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Moqua W<\/span>ell<\/a>\u00a0is located on the island of Nauru. In this tropical location, a limestone plateau formed low cliffs, which later produced caves. Inside, Moqua Well is a 16-foot-deep freshwater lake. During World War II, this lake was a primary source of freshwater for the people living on Nauru Island. Its integral nature during the war earned it the name \u201cwell\u201d instead of \u201clake.\u201d After the war, it was primarily a destination for partiers to drink. It also happens to be a fascinating tourist attraction. Close to the mainland of Greece, it\u2019s located in Melissani Cave on the Greek island of Kefalonia. According to Greek mythology, Melissani was the cave of the nymphs, female deities who are usually personifications of nature. Tourists have remarked on the clarity of the water, which can make boats look as though they\u2019re floating on air.
