Example: <em>The buoy is abeam from us.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Aft<\/em><\/strong>: The portion of the vessel behind the middle area of the vessel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Ahead<\/em><\/strong>: This means in front of the boat. Example: <em>The land is ahead.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Astern<\/em><\/strong>: This means behind the boat. Example: <em>The competition is astern.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Beam<\/em><\/strong>: This is the widest part of your boat. Example: <em>The boat&#8217;s length is 50&#8242;, but the beam is 14&#8242;<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Boom<\/em><\/strong>: This is the horizontal pole that extends from the bottom of the boat&#8217;s mast.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Bow<\/em><\/strong>: This is the front of the boat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Crew<\/em><\/strong>: These are all those who participate in operating the boat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Forward<\/em><\/strong>: This is toward the bow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Freeboard<\/em><\/strong>: This is the height of your deck above the water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Helmsman<\/em><\/strong>: (also called helmsperson) This is the one that steers the boat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Lee and Leeward<\/em><\/strong>: (Pronouncing: &#8220;lee&#8221; and &#8220;loo ward&#8221;) This is downwind.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Port<\/em><\/strong>: 1 \u2013 This is the left side when you are looking forward. 2 \u2013 This is a window in the side of your boat. 3 \u2013 Location where boats and ships dock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Rudder<\/em><\/strong>: This is beneath your boat. It is a flat piece of wood, metal, or fiberglass that is used to steer it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Running Rigging<\/em><\/strong>: This is all of the lines that control any part of your sails, which includes the sheets, outhaul, and halyards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Skipper<\/em><\/strong>: This is the person who is in charge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Standing Rigging<\/em><\/strong>: This is all of the wires or the cables that hold up the mast.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Starboard<\/em><\/strong>: This is the right side of the boat when you face forward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Windward<\/em><\/strong>: This is towards the wind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sailing-tips-for-beginners\"><strong>Sailing Tips for Beginners<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you are aware of the typical terms used while sailing, here is a list of tips to help you when you are a beginner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choose un-crowded and calm water when you are beginning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pick a smaller boat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use a boat rigged with one sail to start.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow all sailing basics for the safety of you and your passengers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research the wind, tide, and weather conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get familiar with the control of the sails.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Capsize to ensure you know how to manage should it happen for real.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show respect to the boom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Memorize the terms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practice as much as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Learning to sail is very exciting, but make sure to take all rules, regulations, and safety information very seriously!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you are ready to take on the wonderful and relaxing world of sailing, then you will need to learn a few things.
