But how do we handle these projects safely during a pandemic? If your wish list for home updates is growing fast\u2014or you desperately need a plumber now\u2014there are a few safety issues to consider before you embark on a new project. We talked to experts about steps you should consider prior to inviting contractors into your home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring these unprecedented times, nothing is more important to me, my team, and our tradespeople than following OSHA COVID-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/Publications\/OSHA3990.pdf\">workforce guidelines<\/a>,\u201d says Chicago interior designer Michelle Rohrer-Lauer, owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michellesinteriors.com\/\">Michelle\u2019s Interiors<\/a>. \u201cNo matter what clients want done, I am committed to providing the safest experience possible for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before You Begin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lakehomes.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/zipwall.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15105\" width=\"559\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lakehomes.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/zipwall.jpg 492w, https:\/\/www.lakehomes.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/zipwall-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 559px) 100vw, 559px\" \/><figcaption>Photo courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zipwall.com\/\">zipwall.com<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michellesinteriors.com\/blog\/safely-updating-your-home\/\">Michelle\u2019s Interiors<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To kick off a design project, Michelle says a great deal can be accomplished via phone, video conferencing, and email to discuss the nature of what isn\u2019t working, what you want to be done, and style and color preferences.<\/p>\n<p>Next, a brief in-home visit\u2014mask-wearing and social distancing required\u2014can be scheduled to take measurements and get a feel for your space layout. Then, sanitized samples of finishes and fabrics can be delivered to your front porch\u2014or you can choose to discuss selections together inside or out in the backyard while wearing masks if preferred.<\/p>\n<p>As your project gets underway, make sure your design professionals follow these tips to ensure the highest standards of safety:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All workers have a designated entrance, wear masks, and maintain social distancing<\/li>\n<li>Zip-wall dividers isolate the room where installers are working<\/li>\n<li>Porta-potty with hand sanitizer on-site for workers<\/li>\n<li>Disinfect frequently touched items such as door pulls<\/li>\n<li>On installation days, all delivery people wear masks and gloves<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Michelle also encourages clients not to touch their new furnishings for 24 hours and sanitize glass and metal surfaces. \u201cMy goal always is to make the design process easy and enjoyable, particularly during these challenging times,\u201d she assures. \u201cI take care of all the design details and monitor safety so clients can focus on their day-to-day life and enjoy the results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Communicate with Craftspeople and Contractors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lakehomes.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/SAFE.renovation.Realtor.com_.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15108\" width=\"573\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lakehomes.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/SAFE.renovation.Realtor.com_.jpg 685w, https:\/\/www.lakehomes.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/SAFE.renovation.Realtor.com_-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lakehomes.com\/info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/SAFE.renovation.Realtor.com_-640x360.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 573px) 100vw, 573px\" \/><figcaption>Photo courtesy of Drazen_Gwtty Images via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/advice\/home-improvement\/how-to-keep-yourself-and-contractors-safe-during-coronoavirus-pandemic\/\">Realtor.com<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure to have a conversation with contractors and renovation professionals prior to them coming into your home. In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/advice\/home-improvement\/how-to-keep-yourself-and-contractors-safe-during-coronoavirus-pandemic\/\">Realtor.com<\/a>, Doug King, president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nari.org\/About-Us\/NARI-Officers\">National Association of the Remodeling Industry<\/a> and president of <a href=\"https:\/\/dougkingcontracting.com\/\">King Contracting<\/a> in St. Petersburg, Florida, suggests asking these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How do you plan to keep my family safe while you\u2019re working here?<\/li>\n<li>Does your company have a written policy or procedure for performing work at private residences?<\/li>\n<li>Who will enforce these policies?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You\u2019ll also want to discuss safety basics and cleanliness and reassure professionals coming into your home they are entering a safe work environment. Everyone\u2014you and your contractors\u2014should be following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/prevention.html\">CDC guidelines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>King also advises that no one should enter your home if there are sick persons in the house or if any of your workers are showing COVID symptoms. He also recommends you leave the house if possible while the work is underway. Be flexible, be understanding if your plans change, and\u2014above all\u2014be patient. Keep in mind that nearly everyone has been sheltering in place for more than a year, and as a result, many renovation projects have been delayed.<\/p>\n<p>The production and distribution of materials and supplies are backed up, contractors and craftspeople are booked out months in advance, and project deadlines have been impacted to an unprecedented degree.<\/p>\n<p>King notes that in some cases, lead times for products such as cabinets, doors, and windows have doubled\u2014and even tripled. Delays are inevitable, and it\u2019s best to mentally prepare yourself for this ahead of time and adjust your expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Be respectful that everyone is trying to strategically\u2014and optimistically\u2014recalibrate together during these uncertain times.
