Since the start of the pandemic in March, we\u2019ve been forced to spend more time indoors. As a result of lockdowns and distancing, the importance of personal space has become crucial. Now, <\/span>more people are investing in lake houses<\/span><\/a>, hoping for much-needed outdoor space and a remedy for that familiar \u201ccooped up\u201d feeling. <\/span><\/p>\n

Due to spending ample time at home, many of us are paying more attention to interior design. After all, if you\u2019re going to spend all day working from home, you might as well enjoy the decor! If you\u2019re looking to re-evaluate your lake home\u2019s <\/span>feng shui<\/span><\/a>, we\u2019ve got some tips for you. <\/span><\/p>\n

We spoke with interior designer Karen Parziale, the lead designer of <\/span>The Real Estate Staging Studio<\/span><\/a> in New York, to learn more. Recently, she\u2019s been redesigning her family\u2019s home on Lake Paradise, and she has advice on the latest interior design trends for lake lovers. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biophilic Design<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A combination of the root words \u201cbio\u201d (life) and \u201cphilic\u201d (love of), this concept of <\/span>biophilic design<\/span><\/a> refers to embracing nature in your interior decor. This concept does not just refer to pictures or representations of nature, but rather incorporating actual pieces from the outdoors inside of your home. <\/span><\/p>\n

Although the biophilic design trend has been popular since the \u201970s and is especially trending this year, it dates back to ancient times. The <\/span>hanging gardens of Babylon<\/span><\/a> are perhaps the first depiction of biophilic design in action. <\/span><\/p>\n

In your lake home, one manifestation of biophilic design might be adding live plants inside your home. And not just potted desk plants. Karen says that it\u2019s trending for plants to be the \u201cbig focal point of the room.\u201d She adds, \u201cfrom a feng shui perspective, the lake has water and earth energy already. Incorporating natural elements like plants, distressed wood, and twigs into your home design helps with balance. You want to have a mix of everything.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s always great when interior design trends align with sustainability. Green design has been trending for many years, but it\u2019s becoming prevalent now and will continue in 2021. Like biophilic design, green design is about connecting with nature. However, while biophilic design is more about the connection itself, green design focuses on environmental well-being more broadly. \u201cIt\u2019s all about a healthier home,\u201d Karen explains. \u201cThis trend involves being intentional about using eco-friendly materials in construction.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

This popular notion of \u2018going green\u2019 applies to both interior decorating and <\/span>landscaping designs<\/span><\/a>. It\u2019s becoming trendy to opt for ground covers over grass to conserve water and choosing furniture that uses recycled materials. In other words, what\u2019s in style is also good for the environment — win-win! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lake houses are not meant to be cold, detached environments. They\u2019re a place of connection with friends and family. In the world of interior design trends, it\u2019s becoming popular to reflect this sense of warmth into the design intentionally. <\/span><\/p>\n

Karen specifies that a home\u2019s warm feel should not be conveyed through a country aesthetic. \u201cThe plaid patterns and \u2018deer-on-the-wall\u2019 look is over,\u201d she says. \u201cInstead, incorporate congruous, earthy tones in a sophisticated way. You also want it to be warm without being modern and glitzy.\u201d In keeping with a sense of warmth,\u00a0<\/span>open-concept spaces<\/span><\/a>\u00a0are trending. The idea of removing walls and borders and installing big, expansive windows evokes a laid-back, welcoming feel consistent with the lake lifestyle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Overall, the biggest interior design trends for 2021 are all about the incorporation of nature and sustainability. In keeping with this idea, it\u2019s no coincidence that\u00a0<\/span>Pantone\u2019s color trend report<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for Spring 2021 names \u201ca range of shades inspired by the beauty of nature\u201d as colors to watch out for next year. <\/span><\/p>\n

The theme of nature is also timely, given what we\u2019re all craving during the pandemic. \u201cWith COVID, people are realizing they\u2019re tired of living in little spaces,\u201d Karen comments. \u201cThey want to be outside more and have outdoor space.\u201d She explains that her business has become busier recently, as she\u2019s designing these outdoor spaces and helping people connect with nature. <\/span><\/p>\n

Whether it\u2019s through using recycled wood, creating an open concept living room, or replacing plaid patterns with warm tones, we hope you can incorporate these trends into your decor.
