However, many fish &#8211;perhaps even in your home lake &#8212; could be endangered. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to <em>The Telegraph<\/em>, a<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/earth\/wildlife\/8672417\/Third-of-freshwater-fish-threatened-with-extinction.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;third of freshwater fish are facing extinction<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Water pollution, overfishing, and loss of habitat are some factors that cause this population decline to happen. As a result, many freshwater fish have been declared critically endangered. Native to the Yangtze River in China, its long protruding nose makes it one of the world&#8217;s longest freshwater fish. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Unfortunately, this fish&#8217;s status is unknown, and many scientists think it could be extinct due to human activity. In part, their disappearance was caused by the construction of a dam that split their population. According to new research from 2020,&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/chinese-paddlefish-which-lived-200-million-years-now-extinct-180973938\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the species is likely extinct<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Although there&#8217;s always the possibility that a species thought to be extinct are still alive somewhere, researchers say it&#8217;s unlikely for the Chinese Paddlefish.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-damba-mipentina\">Damba Mipentina<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/9\/98\/Paretroplus_maculatus.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Paretroplus_maculatus.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">These cichlid fish are native to river basins in Northern Madagascar. A small number of this species have been bred in captivity; no one has seen this fish in its home waters since 2011. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Part of the reason for its decline (in addition to overfishing and pollution) is the introduction of the invasive Asian Snakehead fish, a non-native species. If you&#8217;re an avid angler at your lake house, you&#8217;ve probably heard of sturgeon. But did you know that they are critically endangered? <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Of all the sturgeon subspecies, the Alabama Sturgeon is exceedingly rare. In 2000, the Fish and Wildlife Service declared it critically endangered, and in the past ten years, only three people have reported seeing one. Despite fears of its extinction, scientists in 2016&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/mobile\/2016\/08\/the_alabama_sturgeon_lives_fea.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">discovered its DNA<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;in the Alabama River &#8211; restoring hope that this fish is still alive and thriving.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-diamond-darter\">Diamond Darter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/5\/55\/Diamond_darter_%28Crystallaria_cincotta%29.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Diamond_darter_(Crystallaria_cincotta).jpg\">Wikimedia Commons<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The diamond darter is endemic to the Elk River in West Virginia, meaning that this population only exists in this location. Diamond Darters used to thrive throughout the Ohio River watershed until the dam construction changed the population&#8217;s habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Elk River, coal mining and oil and gas drilling have contributed to this population&#8217;s decline. Now, the exact number of remaining species is unknown. However, scientists do know that in the past 30 years, only 19 of these fish have been caught. If you were to see one, its translucent body, small size, and slender shape would make it difficult to recognize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-devil-s-hole-pupfish\">Devil\u2019s Hole Pupfish<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/home.nps.gov\/deva\/learn\/news\/images\/20110102-_DSC8358-1541358036-O-Devils-Hole-pupfish.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/home.nps.gov\/deva\/learn\/news\/alaska-quake-shakes-water-in-devils-hole.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Park Service<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">These small blue fish are native to Devil&#8217;s Hole, a limestone cave lake in Nevada&#8217;s Death Valley National Park. Endemic to this small cave lake since the Ice Age, the Devil&#8217;s Hole Pupfish live in the smallest geographic range for any vertebrate species. Because of this, it&#8217;s always been one of the world&#8217;s rarest freshwater fish (never more than 553), but now, its count marks only 35 fish.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, there is some hope for their conservation.&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/nwrs\/threecolumn.aspx?id=2147597483\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ash Meadows Conservation Facility<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&nbsp;created an artificial environment to replicate Devil&#8217;s Hole and breed these fish to restore the population. When&nbsp;<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/animals\/2019\/03\/endangered-devils-hole-pupfish-breeding-breakthrough\/#:~:text=Devils%20Hole%20pupfish%20are%20likely,breakthrough%20in%20their%20captive%20breeding.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">diving beetles were found eating the eggs<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, scientists developed a new strategy in 2018, raising the eggs in a separate lab.
