About Lake Cherokee

Location

Lake Cherokee is located in Tamassee, an unincorporated area of Oconee County, South Carolina. The lake is approximately 7 miles off of US Scenic Highway 11 and is also not far from SC 107. Lake Cherokee is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains between the Chattooga River and Lake Jocassee, northeast of the Oconee State Park. It is within the Seneca Watershed, one of two watersheds that cross Oconee County.

Largest Private Lake

Lake Cherokee is the largest of the private lakes that are found in the Oconee County mountain region of South Carolina. Lake Cherokee is approximately 250 acres in area and has a depth of 42 feet. It is at an elevation of 1,073 feet (327 meters) above sea level. The lake is alternately shown as Lake Cherokee or Lake Isaquenna on some maps (even the Oconee County Assessor's map).

Quick Access to Recreational Areas

Lake Cherokee borders the Sumter National Forest (Andrew Pickens Ranger District) which covers about one fourth of the county and offers access to hiking, camping and hunting. It is also in close proximity to the Piedmont Forestry Center in the Cheohee Valley which offers a location for short term rentals for conferences, retreats, etc. The nearest towns within a 15 mile radius are Salem and Walhalla (the Oconee County seat). These are a few of the factors that help to make Lake Cherokee a popular location for vacation homes or year-round residences.
