About the Area

Elk River thrives on its prime location as the crossroads to travelers moving in and out of the Twin Cities each day. Set on both Highway 169 and Highway 10, those who are heading either north toward Mille Lacs Lake, or northwest toward St. Cloud, make this their regular stopping off point with its wide variety of restaurants and services. The town also sits on the banks of the Mississippi River, and keeps and active downtown geared toward its historic setting.

As you head west of Elk River you'll drive across Lake Orono, a small recreational water body created from the river with the same name as the community. Just a few miles further up the road is the town of Big Lake - set against another water body to match its heading - along with Mitchell Lake on the other side of the narrows. Big Lake and Mitchell Lake are both entirely within the city limits, which makes for great hiking and biking all along the water's edge. Eagle Lake is just to the north, and offers a more rural character with a wide mixture of lake homes and cabins.

Past Becker, and even closer to St. Cloud around Clear Lake, are numerous smaller lakes sitting south of Highway 10. These are popular water bodies for those who want to live on lakeshore not too far from St. Cloud, but also have ties to the Twin Cities. And just north of them is the Briggs Lake Chain, where you can travel by boat through Rush Lake, Julia Lake, and Briggs Lake, plus be just down the road from Elk Lake. Lakefront homes and cabins here have easy access to both St. Cloud and Minneapolis on both Highway 10 and Interstate 94.

North of Elk River you will find a few more lakes along the Highway 169 corridor around Zimmerman and Princeton. Elk Lake, Fremont Lake and Silver Lake are all in this area, where you can find both affordable waterfront homes and cabins just past the suburbs.
