Mankato and North Mankato, Minnesota sit at opposite sides of the Minnesota River, but combine to form an energetic college community of about 50,000 residents. At a little over an hour southwest of the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area, Mankato has good proximity for those who enjoy the wide ranging amenities of a smaller city, but like the ability to get to Minneapolis and St. Paul easily. Mankato State University keeps the town vibrant and the businesses busy.
The greater amount of lakeshore properties in the area are on the lakes to the east of Mankato and St. Peter. Many year-round residents have lake homes on these water bodies that form a cluster of lakes…anywhere from just a couple miles to about twenty miles to the east toward Waterville and Faribault. These lakes are spread out over Blue Earth County, Waseca County, Le Sueur County and Rice County, and contain thousands of lakefront homes and cabins.
Several of the lakes near Mankato are quite large - between 1,000 and 2,000 acres - such as Lake Elysian, Madison Lake, Lake Washington and Lake Jefferson. And there are many others at several hundred acres, giving plenty of recreational activities for those who own waterfront real estate on them.
To the northwest of Mankato, toward New Ulm, you will find Swan Lake, which is the largest lake in Southern Minnesota at over 9,000 acres. However, don't let the map fool you…it is also only about eight feet deep at the most, so its recreational attributes are a bit limited. Unless, of course, you are a duck hunter!
Heading southwest from Mankato about ten miles is the community of Lake Crystal, which is home to about 2,500 residents. Embedded between its three nearly conjoined water bodies of Lake Crystal, Loon Lake, and Lily Lake, the town obviously has a waterfront focus, and acts as a scenic bedroom community to its larger neighbor up the road.
