About the Area

As you head north from Duluth toward Canada along Highway 61, the scenery over Lake Superior begins to mesmerize. Rugged, rocky terrain, cascading waterfalls and gorges that drop from sight make up the land in this beautiful northeastern corner of Minnesota. Waterfront homes along Lake Superior's North Shore have as many varied settings as you could imagine. Some are perched high above the ocean-like waters with seemingly endless views, while other lakefront retreats can be hidden in dense woods on large tracts of acreage, hardly visible to passers-by.

This is the eastern tip of the Minnesota's Arrowhead Region - a place that people come to for stress relief, or even a new way of life. Over the past decade or two, Grand Marais has gained a reputation as an artist's community, and a place that is a bit removed from the hectic life many of us have become accustomed to. Surrounded by the beauty of Lake Superior, Superior National Forest and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the Northern North Shore, including Lutsen, Hovland, Tofte, Schroeder and Grand Portage is a bit like the scenic towns of the Colorado Rockies before everyone found out about them and wanted to live there.

But even though people have discovered the beauty of the area, it is a long way from dense civilization, which helps keep the population in check and its remoteness sustained. The inland lakes of Cook County share a wilderness protected as the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, and so development here is quite limited. However, you will find gorgeous log structures and a wide variety of primitive cabins and other homes snugly tucked along the craggy shores of these pristine lakes off the beaten path, and along the Gunflint Trail or other remote roads.

Some of the larger inland lakes in this tip of the Arrowhead are Brule Lake, Greenwood Lake, Devil Track Lake and Seagull Lake. But no matter which direction you travel here, there will be water blocking your path…and it will be some of the cleanest you'll find anywhere.
