About the Area

In the past decade or so, the community of Forest Lake has grown from a small water's edge hamlet, to the main hub for the little towns and townships that dot the map to the north of the Twin Cities along the Interstate 35 corridor. Still holding onto its identity which ties its name to this popular 2,200 acre water playground, Forest Lake has an active lifestyle and busy downtown business district along the lake's western shore. And just so residents have other options, 500 acre Clear Lake sits just a few blocks away.

As the focal point to this area, about a half hour north of Minneapolis and St. Paul, the city of Forest Lake draws both students and those in need of everyday services from the surrounding villages and townships for about ten to fifteen miles. Its restaurants and stores stay busy year-round, and the shopping options continue to grow to meet the demand.

The lake itself is a vast expanse of three connected bodies of water named: First Lake, Second Lake and Third Lake. Although, not extremely creative in choosing the three titles, they seem to have done the job since most everyone recognizes these geographic locations when it comes to talking about lake homes for sale…or great fishing spots. First Lake, which is home to the business district, also typically hosts the most expensive real estate, but the entire lake has a variety of housing from cabins to high end showpieces.

As you drive a few miles east of Forest Lake toward Wisconsin, you will enter Scandia, which feels a bit more like New England with its plentiful barns and small active farms. Many serene lakes appear as you wind along narrow wooded roads, and within about ten miles you will end up at the extremely scenic St. Croix River and its storybook towns such as Marine On St. Croix.

Another group of lakes will be found to the west of Forest Lake throughout Linwood and Columbus Township, and there are many other recreational lakes that are scattered within just a few miles. Most of the lakeshore properties in the outer edges of the Forest Lake region have larger lots and plenty of wooded privacy.
