About the Area

Faribault, Minnesota is a city of about 30,000 residents a little less than an hour from downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, just off Interstate 35. It is a convenient location for commuters to the Twin Cities who like the atmosphere of Southern Minnesota, or for those who just need to be somewhat close to the metro area. You can find waterfront homes and cabins on the many lakes in the area, and also along the Cannon River.

Faribault sits in the south central portion of Rice County, and just to its west is where you will find a reasonably large cluster of recreational lakes extending through Waterville and all the way over to Mankato. The largest of the lakes in Rice County is 1,600 acre Cannon Lake, only a couple miles out of town. From there the Cannon River flows through the north side of the community, and further east into the Mississippi River, which gives Faribault a variety of waterfront amenities within the city limits.

Just over the Rice County line is the community of Waterville, lodged between the two major water bodies of Tetonka Lake and Sakatah Lake. Its lifestyle is very much tied to the surrounding waters, and its name suits it perfectly. At about 2,000 permanent residents, it is also an attractive destination for visitors. Sakatah State Park is just out of town to the east, and its location in the middle of the Sakatah State Trail - a paved bike trail running from Faribault to Mankato - makes it a perfect stopping off point for hungry and thirsty peddlers.

Generally, Southern Minnesota lakes are harder to come by than they are to the north and west of the Twin Cities. Other larger cities in the area such as Northfield, Owatonna and Waseca have a few lakes and various rivers near them, but the largest grouping is near Faribault and Waterville.

You should be pleasantly surprised by the prices for waterfront properties here, as lakeshore real estate is typically quite reasonable on many of these lakes. There are still plenty of lake cabins mixed in with year-round homes throughout the area, and a wide variety of waterfront settings to choose from.
