About the Area

On the east end of the Brainerd Lakes Area are the Central Minnesota communities of Crosby and Deerwood. Both small lakefront cities on the shores of highly regarded Serpent Lake, traffic flows through each of their downtown areas, equidistant between Aitkin and Brainerd. Ironton is also situated on this path, mostly conjoined with Crosby and making it difficult to tell exactly where the separation lies.

This is Cuyuna Country, where a bustling iron ore mining operation created the Cuyuna Range about 100 years ago. After giving up 100,000,000 tons or ore over the years, the mines were finally closed and abandoned. But forward thinking locals helped bring about a brand new attraction to the area, as reclaimed mine pits turned into extremely clear lakes perfectly suited for trout habitation and scuba diving. Along with biking on the Cuyuna Lakes Trail, and the impressive Mountain Biking offerings throughout the Cuyuna Lakes Recreation Area, this region is becoming widely recognized as one of Minnesota's most versatile outdoor playgrounds.

Serpent Lake is a gem of a water body for an in-town lake. With about 1,000 acres of surface area and ten foot water clarity, locals are fortunate to have it as their centerpiece. Because of the lake's size, most area residents who can afford to live on water are able to have lake homes here, and can visit good friends and relatives by boat for weekend picnics and evening barbeques. Those with real estate off the water in town can also easily partake in neighborhood gatherings, with ancillary activities such as water-skiing and swimming to keep the kids entertained.

About five miles to the south of Deerwood is Bay Lake. Known as the home of Ruttger's Resort, the lake has been an important destination for outdoorsmen since the late 1800s, and has some of the most desirable - and high valued - waterfront real estate in the Central Minnesota Area. Tales of monster fish and unbelievable hunting adventures solidified Bay Lake's place in the hearts of adventurers from across the country who took on difficult excursions just to get here, and many of these photos still adorn the walls of the resort today. The lake's beauty and size - at over 2,000 acres - mixes well with extraordinarily exquisite lake homes that have been built here.
