About the Area

Bemidji has a distinctive aura as a college town on the lake. Bemidji State University gives this community its life with nearly 5,000 students and scores of well-paid faculty. A wide variety of restaurants and shopping venues bring in visitors in search of mini-vacations, making this the hub of the Northwest Minnesota Lake Area. But beyond the college town atmosphere, Bemidji sits at the epicenter of 400 lakes within a 25 mile radius, making it an area of abundant recreation.

Bemidji has a strong economy, and many people have relocated here over the past several years from all across the country, bringing waterfront property values to new heights. Yet, you are still able to purchase a decent lakefront home on many of the close-in lakes in the $300,000s, and less than that in the outlying area lakes.

Although the area is not widely recognized as a seasonal cabin getaway, there are plenty of lakeshore cabins interspersed with the year-round homes. And many of those cabins belong to local residents who can be at their vacation place in less than a half hour…avoiding any thought of traffic congestion in the process.

You will find plenty of lakes as you head in any direction away from town. Some of the larger water bodies in Minnesota are just to the east and south, with Leech Lake, Lake Winnibigoshish, and the Cass Lake Chain. Lake Bemidji itself - right in the middle of town - is no slouch at 6,400 acres, and don't forget about the Mississippi River as another waterfront real estate opportunity, as it passes through town on its long journey south.

Just north of the city a few miles is the Turtle Lake Chain and its surrounding lakes, which are popular lake home settings for area professionals who enjoy lakeshore privacy and good proximity to work. And for those who enjoy being close to a larger city like Bemidji - but the lifestyle of a smaller community - there are plenty of reasonably priced lake properties around Blackduck to the north and Bagley to the west.
